This report focuses on Amnesty Internationals concerns about human rights in Guinea under the government of President Lansana Conte. A failed coup attempt in 1985 resulted in widespread arrests and "disappearances" of those suspected of involvement: allegations of extrajudicial killings and torture were made in the weeks following the coup attempt. 341 prisoners were tried in secret by military courts between July and September 1986. Although the Government claims to have released all of those convicted of involvement in the coup, 63 prisoners still remain unaccounted for. AI is concerned about persecution of supporters of opposition groups, namely the Rassemblement du peuple guineen (RPG) and about ill-treatment in detention and killings of demonstrators.
