Angola: An appeal for prompt action to protect human rights

Although the ceasefire agreed between the Government of Angola and UNITA in May 1991 is still holding, AI is concerned that it is being threatened by political killings, both by government and UNITA forces, and other violations of the provisions of the Peace Accords. The most widely reported killings of prisoners in recent months were those of former UNITA officials Pedro “Tito” Chingunji and Fernando Wilson dos Santos and members of their families. Other concerns include the holding of prisoners by both sides and restriction of the movement of those prisoners released by both sides under the terms of the Peace Accords. AI is also calling for the fate of those either extrajudicially killed or “disappeared” before May 1991 to be clarified.
