URGENT ACTION

Egyptian protester released by military

On 19 June 2012, Mahmoud Mohamed Amin was released from preventive detention in a prison in the Egyptian capital Cairo. He still faces charges and could be tried in a military court.

Amnesty International met with Mahmoud Mohamed Amin in Cairo on 26 June 2012. He stated that he participated in the Abbaseya protest in Cairo on 4 May to show solidarity with Atef Al-Gohary, a friend killed during a earlier sit-in protest in Abbaseya on 2 May 2012.During that sit-in Mahmoud Mohamed Amin was in hospital awaiting surgery for a damaged facial nerve after he was hit by shotgun pellets fired by riot police during the January 2011 uprising in Tahrir square. He was also left permanently blind in his right eye.

The beating he received during his arrest on 4 May, by military officers, also injured his left eye which has since recovered. He has stated that he was denied adequate medical attention for his health condition whilst in Cairo prison. He was only given mild pain killers for the nerve damage that was causing him pain. His pain was exacerbated during the hunger strike that he undertook from 20 May until around 10 June. During his hunger strike he was moved into solitary confinement. He had initially been sharing an overcrowded cell with 45 people.

Before Mahmoud Mohamed Amin was released a number of prominent journalists in Egypt wrote about the condition of his health, referring to Amnesty International’s documents and criticizing the lack of medical attention he receives, as an active member of the “25 January Revolution”, compared to the medical attention received by former President Hosni Mubarak.

Mahmoud Mohamed Amin thanked Amnesty International for campaigning on his behalf and urged the organization to follow the situation of the remaining detainees that were arrested in the Abbaseya protest of 4 May 2012.

Many thanks to all of those who sent appeals. No further action is requested.
