BAHRAINShaikh 'Abd al-Amir Mansur al-Jamri, aged 58

New information concerning Shaikh 'Abd al-Amir Mansur al-Jamri, who has been held without charge or trial since his arrest on 15 April 1995, has renewed Amnesty International's concerns for his health and safety.

Shaikh al-Jamri was reportedly admitted to the military hospital in Bahrain on the 7 June 1995 and remained there for about one week. The precise reasons for his admission to hospital are unknown, although it is believed that he may have a chest infection. He is known to suffer from heart disease.

In addition, new reports suggest that he may have been transferred again to another location in a dry dock area in the southern region of the country. As far as Amnesty International is aware there is no official prison in that area. There are concerns that he may once again be in incommunicado detention.

FURTHER RECOMMENDED ACTION: Please send telegrams/telexes/faxes/express and airmail letters

- expressing renewed concern about the deteriorating health of Shaikh 'Abd al-Amir al-Jamri and urging that he be given immediate access to independent doctors;

- expressing concern about his continued detention without charge or trial;

- urging that Shaikh 'Abd al-Amir al-Jamri be released promptly unless he is charged with a recognizable criminal offence and tried in accordance with international standards for a fair trial;

- urging that all detainees arrested in connection with the widespread protests in Bahrain be granted prompt and regular access to their families, lawyers and independent doctors as necessary.
