Amnesty International has learned that Zahra Salman Hilal was released from detention on 29 May. She had been held without charge or trial at the Juveniles Prison in Madinat 'Issa. Her husband, Ahmad Mahdi Salman, was arrested in mid-January 1995 and remains in detention.


FURTHER RECOMMENDED ACTION: Please send telegrams/telexes/faxes/express and airmail letters:


- welcoming the release of Zahra Salman Hilal;

- urging that all detainees arrested in connection with the widespread protests in Bahrain, including Ahmad Mahdi Salman, be granted prompt and regular access to their families, lawyers and independent doctors as necessary;

- urging that these detainees be released promptly unless they are to be charged with a recognizable criminal offence and tried in accordance with international standards for fair trial.
