BAHRAINSeyyid Ja'far al-'Alawi

Amnesty International has received disturbing reports that Seyyid Ja'far al-'Alawi was moved from Jaw Prison No. 1 to al-Qal'a Prison about a month ago. He is being held in incommunicado detention and may be subjected to torture. His transfer was apparently due to the fact that he went on hunger-strike and that he was encouraging other prisoners to do the same.

Seyyid Ja'far al-'Alawi was sentenced to life imprisonment, after an unfair trial, following his part in an alleged coup attempt in 1981.

FURTHER RECOMMENDED ACTION: Please send telegrams/telexes/faxes/express and airmail letters:

- expressing concern at reports that Seyyid Ja'far al-'Alawi is being held in incommunicado detention and may be subjected to torture;

- urging the authorities to take immediate action to ensure that he receive appropriate medical treatment and he has access to family visits;

- seeking assurances that he will be humanely treated in accordance with international human rights standards.
