Still waiting for commitment to end forced evictions
In response to the French government's statements on housing and the situation of Roma this week Amnesty International's Europe and Central Asia Deputy Programme Director Jezerca Tigani said:"Some positive steps have been announced by the French Prime Minister with regard to the situation of the Roma, but we have not seen a clear commitment from the government to put an end to forced evictions and make sure that a policy is put in place which respects and protects their right to housing - France needs to bring its laws into line with its international obligations. Until the appropriate measures are taken, evictions of Roma will continue.”"The implementation of eviction orders must be suspended until adequate alternative accommodation is in place for those who are evicted. Otherwise they will continue to be moved from one camp to another."
