PAKISTAN:Dr. Khatumal Jeevan, opposition legislator

The press in Pakistan reports that Dr. Khatumal Jeevan, an opposition legislator who on 4 August was arrested in Mirpurkhas spoke to newsmen at the residence of the Sindh Chief Minister in Karachi on 3 September. He reportedly declared that he wished to extend "full cooperation and support to Sindh Chief Minister Jam Sadiq Ali for improving law and order and achieving goals of development in the province".

Regarding his month-long disappearance he stated "I was neither arrested nor under any pressure to support Jam Saddiq Ali. I was on a tour of Sindh and Punjab during the last couple of weeks." (Dawn, 4 September 1991) The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Minorities Forum allege that Dr. Khatumal Jeevan, PPP legislator representing the country's Hindu minority, was released only after he had pledged to leave the opposition and that he was forced to issue the public statement of 3 September.

No further action is required. Thank to all those who sent appeals on his behalf.
