Amnesty International has been informed that Mohamed Shafeeq was released from house arrest on 27 August 1995. No further action on his behalf is required.


Amnesty International continues to be concerned about Ahamed Shafeeq, who remains under house arrest and Ali Moosa Didi, who is detained at Male' police headquarters. Both men are suffering from serious health problems.


FURTHER RECOMMENDED ACTION: Please send telegrams/telexes/faxes/express/ airmail letters in English or in your own language:

- welcoming the release of Mohamed Shafeeq from house arrest on 27 August;

- expressing concern about the continued detention of Ali Moosa Didi and Ahamed Shafeeq and about their state of health;

- requesting that Ali Moosa Didi be humanely treated while in custody at Male' police headquarters and while acknowledging that he has received regular hospital treatment, requesting that he continue to be given all necessary medical attention for his heart condition;

- calling for the immediate release of Ali Moosa Didi and Ahamed Shafeeq, if they are not to be promptly charged with recognizable criminal offences.
