PhYo Wai aung released
Since the issue of this UA, the Myanmar authorities released Phyo Wai Aung in the early afternoon of 3 August.
Phyo Wai Aung had been arrested on 22 April 2010 and accused of involvement in bombings a week earlier at the X20 stadium in Myanmar's largest city, Yangon, during the Water Festival. He is believed to have been tortured during interrogation, and was sentenced to death after a trial which fell well short of international standards. He developed symptoms of serious illness, but was not given adequate medical care at Insein prison until late May 2012, after he had been diagnosed with advanced liver cancer.
His family have thanked Amnesty International and all the other organisations which campaigned for Phyo Wai Aung’s release.
No further action is requested from the UA network. Many thanks to all who sent appeals.
