Amnesty International reaction to Egypt torture video

In reaction to a video posted online today showing members of the army and security forces beating and electrocuting detainees, Amnesty International said:

“Judging by this deeply unsettling video, suspects are still being subjected to torture and other ill-treatment in Egypt.”

“The uniforms may have been replaced with new ones but the behaviour of the security forces seems to be the same.”

“The Egyptian military authorities have committed publicly to creating a climate where the rule of law is respected after so many years of state repression. Now they must match their words with direct and immediate action."

“We welcome the announcement that that the military authorities are investigating this incident. The outcome of such an investigation must be made public and those abusing the men prosecuted."

"The army and security officers in the video must immediately be suspended pending the result of the investigation."
