Italy: On the edge: Roma, forced evictions and segregation in Italy

The Italian government introduced the “Nomad Emergency” legislation in 2008, which led to widespread discrimination against and violations of the rights of Roma across the country. It was ruled unlawful by the Council of State, Italy’s highest administrative court, in November 2011. However, very little has changed for Roma since. Forced evictions continue as does ethnic segregation in housing. Among the recommendations made in this document, Amnesty International urges the Italian Government to implement the Council of State ruling; to end forced evictions; and to desegregate authorized camps.
