East Timor: The September and October 1995 riots: arbitrary detention and torture

In September and October 1995, East Timor experienced riots which resulted in arbitrary detention, beatings and torture by the authorities. At least 43 people are believed to be facing trial for their alleged involvement in the riots. AI is concerned that the Indonesian security forces used the riots as a pretext for arresting individuals in peaceful pro-independence activities and that those arrested may not have the chance of a fair trial. AI has also received reports that those detained were tortured and beaten in detention despite denials of this by the authorities.
