Central African Republic: Mandated to protect, equipped to succeed? Strengthening peacekeeping in Central African Republic

Since early 2014, when Central African Republic was suffering the most intense period of civil conflict in which more than 5,000 people were killed and almost one million people displaced, Amnesty International called on the international community to deploy a UN peacekeeping force to protect civilians from the armed groups preying on them. Amnesty International is concerned that MINUSCA is not adequately equipped to fully deliver the mandate provided by the UN Security Council and that these weaknesses must be addressed, including when the UN Security Council considers renewal of the Mission’s mandate in April 2016.
