Iran: Iraqi cleric detained, whereabouts unknown: Ahmed al-Qubbanji

Iraqi cleric and commentator Ahmed al-Qubbanji was detained on 17 or 18 February in Qom, central Iran, while visiting a member of his family. He is not known to have been formally charged, but media reports citing officials state that he was arrested for allegedly “spying for Israel” and could face the death penalty. His whereabouts are not known and he is at risk of torture or other ill-treatment and may be subjected to enforced disappearance. He is believed to be a prisoner of conscience.
