India: Open letter: Serious risks to the health and safety of local communities in Orissa

In this open letter Amnesty International expresses its concern over for the safety of residents of villages around Vedanta Aluminium’s refinery in Orissa, following reports of a significant rise in the level of toxic waste material in the refinery’s main red mud pond. The organization urges the Indian authorities to order an independent audit of this pond, making the outcomes public and accessible to local communities. The authorities must also take steps to protect the local communities from any contamination of water, soil or air.
