Angola: Will the new government protect human rights?
This report updates information presented in the report "Angola: An appeal for prompt action to protect human rights" (AFR 12/02/92, 6 May 1992). It provides details of further abuses allegedly committed by both government and UNITA forces and gives AI's recommendations for prevention of further violations. Topics covered include: recent reports of political violence and human rights abuses; political prisoners released since the May 1991 Peace Accords; prisoners still held by the government; recent reports of ill-treatment of government-held prisoners; and prisoners still held by UNITA. The report concludes with AI's recommendations for the protection of human rights in Angola.
