Protect Mexico’s Invisible Victims

Every year, tens of thousands of people leave their homes in Central America and journey north through Mexico as irregular migrants. Driven by grinding poverty and insecurity back home, they travel in hope of reaching the USA with its promise of work and a new life. But all too often their dreams are turned to nightmares as they brave one of the most dangerous journeys in the world.

Excluded from mainstream society and denied protection , they are condemned to a life on the margins.

Thousands fall victim to beatings, abduction, rape or even murder by criminal gangs who often act in complicity with public officials. The large majority of abuses are ignored and never investigated.

These abuses must no longer be tolerated in Mexico.

Protect Migrants in Mexico

Dear President Calderón,

I am writing to express my deep concern at the fate of many Central American migrants in transit through Mexico. Thousands each year fall victim to beatings, abduction, rape and even murder at the hands of criminal gangs, often in complicity with public officials.

It's time to convert your government's promises to improve protection for migrants in Mexico into effective measures. I call on your government to lead the development and implementation of an action plan together with state authorities to protect migrants in transit and ensure that abuses are investigated and perpetrators are brought to justice.

As an essential first step, I ask you to ensure collection and publication of nationwide data on abuses against migrants and on the action taken to hold those responsible to account.

Yours sincerely,
