“I lost all of my wares… I have to beg”, Margaret, Kabete, Nairobi.

Join Amnesty International at the World Social Forum in Dakar, Senegal, as we call for an end to forced evictions in Africa.

Community activists from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and Zimbabwe have linked up with Amnesty International's Demand Dignity campaign to share their experiences.

Hundreds of thousands of people are left homeless each year when they are forcibly evicted by the authorities. The effects of forced evictions can be catastrophic. People lose not only their homes, but their possessions and livelihoods. Access to food, clean water and sanitation can become difficult. Without a home, it is harder to find work, to go to school and to stay healthy. Forced evictions often involve violence, with officials using excessive force and even firearms.

The World Social Forum gives these community activists from across Africa a chance to get their voices heard and turn the spotlight on their vital work. It also enables them to build alliances with other organizations working on evictions and housing rights. Follow our delegates at the World Social Forum on Twitter (@demanddignity) or find us on Facebook.

Uganda

I have been an active advocate training the local people of their rights over land in Uganda. Much as we have a very well written and clear Land Act, evictions are as often as any thing you might wish to compare to. just a week aback there was an eviction in Luzira, Kampala that turn bloody and two people lost lives in the process. This is the best time Peoples rights over land ownership is observed, i will be much obliged to attend this conference.

I have been living in India for about one month now and I have witnessed for evictions in the slums here and it is such a problem. Families are forced from their homes being denied the basic human right to a shelter. What kind of world is this when we take from those who truly have nothing?
