Join Amnesty International at the World Social Forum in Dakar, Senegal, as we call for an end to forced evictions in Africa.
Community activists from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and Zimbabwe have linked up with Amnesty International's Demand Dignity campaign to share their experiences.
Hundreds of thousands of people are left homeless each year when they are forcibly evicted by the authorities. The effects of forced evictions can be catastrophic. People lose not only their homes, but their possessions and livelihoods. Access to food, clean water and sanitation can become difficult. Without a home, it is harder to find work, to go to school and to stay healthy. Forced evictions often involve violence, with officials using excessive force and even firearms.
The World Social Forum gives these community activists from across Africa a chance to get their voices heard and turn the spotlight on their vital work. It also enables them to build alliances with other organizations working on evictions and housing rights.
