Water is a human right: End discrimination against Roma in Slovenia

Join the campaign to ensure that Roma in Slovenia have access to clean, safe drinking water, sanitation and adequate housing. Attend this event and add 60 steps to the Rights Journey.

In Slovenia, like the rest of Europe, nearly 100 per cent of the population has access to safe drinking water. Yet today, some Roma communities struggle to collect even small amounts of water for drinking, washing and cooking.

Silvana Hudorovac, who lives with her family in an informal Roma settlement near Ponova vas, with no water or sanitation, told us: “We have to use the water from the stream which is very dirty. Children vomit and get diarrhoea.”

This is not by chance or by choice – it is due to discrimination.

Many Roma are denied access to these vital public services because their homes are in “irregular settlements”. But widespread discrimination against Roma in towns across Slovenia often means living in these settlements is their only option. Other communities and local authorities block Roma families from moving into their areas and very little social housing exists as an alternative.

Housing, water and sanitation are human rights. Find out more about what life is like for Roma in Slovenia who face discrimination every day – and take action

If water is not a basic human right, then what is?

August 17, 2011

It is hard to imagine not having the basic human right of clean drinking water. My heart goes out to all people who have to worry about becoming sick from something they need to consume just to survive. This discrimination has to stop. I urge those in power to do what they can to ensure clean drinking water to all citizens.

I FEEL SICK THINKING ABUOT PEOPLE NOT HAVING CLEAN WATER TO DRINK.THIS IS THE MOST BASIC OF HUMAN RIGHTS,MOTHERS SHOULD NOT HAVE TO SEE HER CHILDREN SICK FOM TAINTED WATER. NO ONE SHOULD BE DENIED WATER, NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE. I URGE THE PEOPLE IN POWER T PLEASE TAKE ACTION TO RIGHT THIS TERRIBLE INJUSTICE. MAKE CLEAN DRINKING WATER A RIGHT FOR ALL.

August 12, 2011

My heart went out to the people who have to live like this. No human being should have to live in those conditions and be forced to drink water that causes sickness. No person deserves to be doubtful of the water they drink and wonder if this time is the time they become seriously ill due to the contanminants. I please urge officials to take action against this terrible happening.

I got deeply sad when reading this news. It is a disaster when you see some people have not access to one of the basic needs such as water. We all know that water is so vital and played a main role in my life. Life is impossible without it. We need an urgent solution. I kindly ask responsible officials to do something for removing this problem. It cannot be considered a small difficulty.
