Fiji: Submission to the UN Universal Periodic Review: Seventh session of the UPR Working Group of the Human Rights Council, February 2010

In this submission, Amnesty International provides information as stipulated in the General Guidelines for the Preparation of Information under the Universal Periodic Review. Amnesty International raises concern over the abrogation of the Constitution, the introduction of Public Emergency Regulations, the removal of the judiciary, and the lack of independence of the Fiji Human Rights Commission. Human rights violations of concern to the organization include restrictions on the right to freedom of expression, attacks on the media, harassment of activists, torture, deaths in detention and violence against women.
