Portugal: Alleged assault of Alexandre Luis Marques Pires Gravanita by an officer of the Public Security Police in a police station in Setubal: WERAN 20/92

Alexandre Luis Marques Pires Gravanita, a 19-year-old student born in Angola, has alleged that on 6 December 1991 he was severely beaten and subjected to racial insults by a police officer in the No 1 police station in Setubal. In his complaint to the Public Prosecutor, he says that he was stopped by a police officer at 7pm on 6 December while trying to cross a road at a pedestrian crossing. After examining his identity card, the police officer ordered him to accompany him to the police station. Shortly after they arrived at the police station Luis Gravanita was allegedly assaulted, insulted and threatened by the officer. He was released without having been charged or having received any explanation. His injuries were later treated at the Sao Bernardo hospital.
