Egypt: Industrial relations conducted by force

This report is concerned mainly with the events surrounding a sit-in at a textile factory in October 1994, when intervention by the security forces ended with the deaths of four people, including a child, the injuring of others and dozens of arrests. The sit-in began in the premises of the Misr Weaving and Textile Company in Kafr al-Dawwar, in protest against proposed changes in working conditions. Information is given on repression of members of other professional organizations, such as the arbitrary detention of lawyers in May 1994. Egypt’s status vis-a-vis relevant human rights instruments in commented upon.
