Turkey: Further information on prisoner of conscience: Osman Murat Ulke

Osman Murat Ulke was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment on 28 January 1997 by the Military Court of the General Staff in Ankara for “alienating the public from the institution of military service” by publicly declaring his conscientious objection and burning his call-up papers in September 1995. At the end of the hearing he was redetained and taken to Mamak Military Prison. Amnesty International considers him to be a prisoner of conscience and is calling for his immediate and unconditional release.
