Greece: Death of Lutfi Osmance allegedly following ill-treatment by police officers while in custody

On 14 August 1996 police officers from Vyrona police station, Athens, arrested 40-year-old Lutfi Osmance. According to newspaper articles he was drunk, vomiting and suffering from stomach pains. Although initially taken to hospital, he was discharged and remanded in custody. Later that night he was found dead, reportedly as a result of a heart attack. However, according to the autopsy report his face and head bore marks of beatings. There is concern that such beatings may have contributed to his heart attack given the large quantity of alcohol he had consumed. Amnesty International is calling for a full investigation of this case by the authorities.
