Pakistan: Unlawful detention and torture of journalists

This document reports AI’s concern about two journalists, Mohammad Ishaq Tunio of the English-language daily “The Nation” and Shafi Bejoro of the Sindhi newspaper “Aftab”, who were reportedly detained and tortured on 28 April 1992 by police officers and armed officials of the ruling alliance. They had apparently been about to report an incident of vote rigging, alleged to have occurred during a by-election in Sanghar district, Sindh province. AI is calling for a full investigation of the detention and alleged torture of Mohammad Ishaq Tunio and Shafi Bejoro. AI is also concerned about reports that two other journalists, Dastagir Bhatti of the English-language daily “The Muslim” and Khalid Khaskheli of the Sindhi “Kawish” were ill-treated on 28 April by the same officials.
