This report updates wide-ranging concerns about the violation of women's human rights in China. It details cases of women detained as a result of continued religious repression, the stifling of political dissent and the use of new state secrets legislation to stem the flow of politically sensitive information. Women who have challenged the detention of male relatives have also been subject to periodic detention, surveillance and intimidation by police. This report looks at the continued torture and ill-treatment of women and the growing number of women on death row as a result of the increasing use of the death penalty, particularly for non-violent and economic crimes. The report also examines human rights abuses as a result of the enforced birth control policy. It contains recommendations to the authorities and four appeals cases underlining concerns about political and religious repression and the death penalty.\n
