In mid-March 2003, after a period of apparent movement towards a more open and permissive approach, Cuban authorities carried out an unprecedented crackdown on the dissident movement on the island. This document provides an overview of the background and current situation of each of the 75 dissidents involved. Concurrently, the Cuban government ended a three-year de facto moratorium on executions. Additionally Amnesty International believes that the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States, and its related measures, have had undeniably negative consequences for the enjoyment of human rights in Cuba.
