Lesotho: Torture, political killings and abuses against trade unionists

This paper reports AI’s concern about the apparent failure of the Lesotho Government to respect human rights in a number of important respects, and, further, to investigate and prevent adequately such violations. Specific concerns include: the continuing imprisonment of 23 people convicted in allegedly unfair trials after the military coup of 1986; the recent imprisonment of trade union officials and restriction of their activities; the alleged torture and death of a criminal suspect in police detention; the abduction and killing of a trade union official; six prisoners injured in a disturbance at Maseru prison, reportedly kept in poor conditions and denied treatment; the shooting of two youths by police; and reported ill- treatment of prisoners.
