In this submission, Amnesty International comments on the implementation of recommendations supported by Japan during its previous UPR in April 2008. At present, national legislation on discrimination does not provide adequate protection on several grounds. The organization expresses concern about torture and ill-treatment of detainees in the daiyo kangoku system and about the vulnerable status of asylum seekers and refugees. Amnesty International considers the continued denial of justice to the survivors of Japan’s military sexual slavery system to be a serious human rights violation.
