Nigeria: Death sentences and executions for armed robbery

This document contains reports of six death sentences handed down in Nigeria in 1991 and four executions known to have taken place in 1990 and 1991. Joseph Okon, convicted of armed robbery and sentenced to death in September 1980 by Lagos High Court, is now awaiting the result of his plea for clemency. Sunday Okereke and three others (names not known) were sentenced to death by the Robbery and Firearms Tribunal in Enugu, Anambra State, in 1990; he was allegedly a minor at the time of his arrest in 1987. Akpan Okodi Umo is currently in Uyo Prison, Akwa Ibom State; he was sentenced to death for armed robbery. The four men reportedly executed in Imo State in 1990/1991 are: Emeka Igbo, Celestine Nwangwu, Celestine Eze and Sunday Anyaso.
